Peterson Ridge Star Trails

Sometimes you just have to make an educated guess on camera settings and see what happens. When your setting a camera up for a 40 minute exposure the challenge is guessing how much light will come through the lens over that time span, and if you get it wrong then you waisted 40 minutes. Tonight I guessed on some settings based on the little prior knowledge I had and this was the image produced. I'm pretty happy with the result.

A Sunrise In Sisters

A little cloud cover, and a couple snow covered mountains at sunrise is apparently the perfect recipe for a pretty cool photo.

Lunar Eclipse 2011

Sometime last week I heard there would be a lunar eclipse and that it would happen just before the moon would disappear over the horizon. I immediately thought that a nice landscape with the eclipse would be really cool. Long story shot that is not what happened. After staying up all night to see the eclipse these composite photo above is all I came away with but I underestimated how cool the eclipse would be and I am looking forward to the next one. I think I could really improve on this now that I have shot it once.

Black and Orange Exhibition

Tonight I shot the OSU gymnastics team's Black and Orange Exhibition. This is just an image that caught my eye as I was editing after the meet. I was stupid enough not to charge any of my camera batteries before the meet which meant that my 1D Mark III and 7D were dead leaving just my 40D to shoot with, not the ideal situation but I still managed to go home with a couple good photos.

Playing Catch-Up

Since I have been so bad about posting these past few weeks I thought a post with my favorite photos of the games I failed to write a post about would do the trick. It's my way of catching-up with the photos I didn't show the world beyond my Facebook page. These photos cover the games against California, Washington State, BYU, and Stanford.

Reser Stadium

I haven't posted anything in a while because of how busy I have been so hear is just a quick post of a pretty cool image I shot a couple days ago. With this being my fourth year shooting for OSU I'm starting to look for different photos to keep things fresh. Looking through OSU's archives its not easy finding photos that haven't been taken yet.

The Beavers Win!

I can't believe it... the Beavs finally won their first game of the season on Saturday. Sadly I messed up big time and missed just about every big play OSU made. I have been kicking myself all week because of it. Anyway here is what I did manage to capture on Saturday. Next up BYU in just a few days.

A Long Season Ahead

The Beavers lost again on Saturday which just tells me that this is going to be a long season. But lets not dwell on the negatives of the weekend. I'm back shooting for OSU!! Although this means a serious drop in my income because OSU Athletics pays next to nothing it does mean I get to focus on just taking good photos again. Here is what I came up with for my first week back.

Shadow Lake Forest Fire

Every year there seems to be a forest fire in the Cascade mountains, and usually pretty close to Sisters (my home) This year its the "Shadow Lake Forest Fire" (I've never heard of Shadow Lake) just south of Suttle Lake, and visible from Highway 20. A stretch of road I drive a lot, maybe too much. The last few times I have driven it there have been some great photos to take.

Oregon State vs Sacramento State

Standing around in 90 degree weather for four hours to watch Oregon State lose isn't something I would say I enjoyed doing on Saturday, but the photos from a very exciting game were worth the dehydration and sunburn.

Assisting The PTFC Photographer

On Wednesday night I had an awesome opportunity to assist Craig Mitchelldyer, the team photographer for the Portland Timbers. I have shot some pretty cool things but an MLS game at Jeld-Wen Field beats them all. I honestly think its better than college football, and getting to hang out with the team photographer while meeting some pretty cool people just made it better.

Fall Camp Continued

Since my last post of football photos was so popular I thought I should make another from the new batch of photos. Today the weather was much nicer and the few clouds lingering at the start of practice quickly burned off letting the sun light up Prothro Field. Let the fun begin.

OSU Fall Camp

Today was the first day I have had a chance to take photos for OSU because all week I have been working for the newspaper. There wasn't really anything exciting to take photos of but then again it is only practice. It was very nice to have a chance to take nothing but photos I like and wanted to take instead of shooting specific players for future stories for the paper.

A Sell-Out In Bend

On Tuesday 3,016 fans filled Vince Genna Stadium for the final 2$ Tuesday of the regular season.  Obviously this was good for the team but also for me because I purchased a new lens a week earlier and I really wanted a full stadium to take photos of.

Sunset In Sisters

Tonight I shot this photo of a pretty cool sunset in Sisters as I was leaving to drive back to Corvallis. I like the photo but I am a little mad that I didn't take the pic 5 minutes earlier because it would have been a much better photo.

A Grand Slam For Stetson Olson

I have seen four grand slam home runs in the time I have been shooting baseball but I only have a decent photo from the last two. Yesterday's home run photo might have been dumb luck though because I was on autopilot not really paying any attention to the game and just happened to capture a pretty cool moment.

Baseball And Fireworks

I finally have Internet! This means I can get back to updating my blog and posting photos online. In honer of this magnificent news here are some sub-par firework photos from my 4th of July weekend.

Monday, July 4, 2011

I haven't posted anything in a while so here is a photo that I took about a week ago. The red streak through the middle of the frame is from a passing car that happened to drive through the shot just as the lightning struck. After this there was about 90 seconds of nothing so I began to wonder where the storm had moved and began to worry because it was moving fast. Sure enough the next strike was so close there was no time between the flash and the thunder. When its that close its time to head back into the house.
Next post will cover 4th of July focusing on fireworks, and yep you guessed it... baseball.

First $2 Tuesday Of The Summer

Every Tuesday throughout the season is $2 Tuesday at Vince Genna Stadium. Basically everything is $2 from the ticket to get into the game to the food and drinks, this means that the crowds should be pretty big. I forgot my wide-angle lens so I didn't get a shot of this... very disappointing. Oh well, can't get it right every time. I did get 2 shots that I really liked so I feel like I made up for that little mistake.

Bend Elks Win Home Opener

Last night the Bend Elks started off their first home series of the season with a win defeating the Corvallis Knights 3-2 in 12 innings. I left at the end of the 10th because it was cold, and I had watched the Elks leave 3 men stranded without scoring twice. It was a little frustrating to watch. The rest of the evening was great and I think the photo of the pre-game ceremonies turned out pretty good.

Oregon State Is Headed To The Super Regional

OSU is headed back to a super regional for the first time since 2007. I wish I had a few cool photos to show you but I just didn't have it together last night. It seemed like I was in the wrong place at the wrong time a lot last night.

Oregon State Wins 5-1 Over Creighton

Tonight Oregon State dominated in their second playoff game defeating Creighton 5-1. Sam Gaviglio pitched the entire game, having to work his way through a couple tense moments. It was pretty fun to watch. After shooting the 1pm game (I got a pretty good sunburn from that game) I wasn't really looking forward to sitting in the sun for any amount of time. Luckily the clouds rolled in and even though it was still hot it was much nicer than shooting in direct sunlight.

University of Arkansas-Little Rock

I mentioned that I was shooting for UALR in my last post and this is just a follow up. Today I found their photo galleries which look good and you can embed them. So here are the two galleries they posted after last nights and today's game. Sadly they lost today so their season is over, but they were very easy to work with. I wish all clients were like this.

Oregon State Downs UALR In Corvallis Regional

Tonight I pulled double duty shooting for both OSU and University of Arkansas-Little Rock. From the beginning UALR had control of the game, but in the bottom of the 5th inning Oregon State woke up and started to look like the team they were at the beginning of the season, over coming a four run deficit to win the game 7-4. In addition to a great game (sorry Arkansas) the lighting was fantastic for the first few innings so I tried to take full advantage of it.

OSU Spring Soccer

A few weeks ago I shot a couple of the games that our soccer teams play in the offseason. Not really sure why it has taken me so long to get to editing the photos from those games but they are done now. Here are few from a women's game at Paul Lorenz Field and a men's game played at the NIKE World Campus in Beaverton, Oregon.

Civil War Series 2011 Part 2

Today OSU lost the series to Oregon. Like last night, the final score was 1-4 and again we looked pretty unhappy after the game. I tried to be a little more creative with photos in PK Park this afternoon but it just doesn't have a lot of great angles to shoot from, the sun (when it was out) did help with making the photos look a little more interesting though.

Civil War Series 2011

Last night the Beavers lost the first game of the Civil War Series to the Ducks. As far as I'm concerned it was a pretty boring game to shoot and the stadium's lack of interesting angles to shoot from did not help. Hopefully today will be better for OSU and I will try to find some cool shooting locations. Go Beavs!

Seeing In Black & White

Lately I have been looking at my photos in black and white, and I don't really know why. Something I have noticed though is that when you take away the color in images different things pop in a photo. Backgrounds that seem pretty busy in color can look great in B&W. Anyway since I am going through this little B&W phase I figured I would post a few that I like from the baseball season so far.

Oregon State At Safeco Field

Words can not explain how amazing the sight was when I stepped out of the tunnel and onto the field at Safeco. When the game finally started I found that from the designated photo areas there are no bad angles which is awesome and that all the backgrounds are pretty good. After tonights game I have decided that I must work with MLB before I am done taking photos.

Oregon State Softball

On Thursday I shot the softball game against Washington. I had no intention of shooting the game but my boss called me about 2 hours before and since my only other option was to do homework I decided to shoot the game.

Oregon State 13, Portland 3

For only the second time in Oregon State history a player has hit for the cycle. Ryan Dunn accomplished this on Tuesday night against the Pilots in a non-conference game. Honestly I had no idea this happened until well after the game was over. During the game I tend to lose track of the game and what is taking place because I think more about where I need to go to get good photos.

Postseason Lacrosse

This afternoon I happened to be in Portland when I remembered that OSU lacrosse would be playing the ducks in a postseason game. I was already on my way to the Nike Campus to watch the OSU soccer team play and thought, "why not stop by the lacrosse game on the way home?" This was a much better idea than going back to Corvallis to watch the baseball team lose.

Global Formula Racing: Albany Testing

On Tuesday the Global Formula Racing team tested their 2011 car at the Albany Fairgrounds. It was pretty cool to finally see it flying around the parking lot in the sunlight since I have only seen it in the shop under less then ideal lighting.

OSU Spring Football Game 2011

Finally spring football is over but after today's game I think the majority would like to see a little more time for practice. This was by far the most boring spring game I have shot but like always I treat it as if I were shooting game day in the fall and came away with some decent photos for OSU and apparently The Oregonian to use.

Spring Football 2011

Tomorrow I will be shooting the OSU spring game (so obviously there will be a post of that tomorrow) which signifies the end of spring football practices. I did a pretty poor job covering spring football this year. Not sure why but I just had no motivation to cover spring football and lets be honest, you have to be pretty interested in football (which I am not) to get excited about watching a bunch of practices.

Oregon State 7, Washington State 6

Once again the Beavers found a way to win by tying the the game 6 - 6 in the bottom of the 8th then scoring the winning run in the bottom of the 9th. Oregon State's current win streak is now at 11 strait and each game seems to be just a little more exciting then the last.

Oregon State Downs Wazzu 4-2

There is nothing better than a baseball game played in late afternoon sunlight. Tonight I tried to take advantage of the lighting that I have been waiting for all year. Here is what I came up with.

Beavers Sweep Sun Devils!

Beavers Come Up Short Against Timbers

Tonight OSU played the Portland Timbers in an exhibition match at Paul Lorenz Field in Corvallis. The Beavers put up a good fight but just didn't have enough to keep the Timbers scoreless and lost 1-0. I ended last soccer season with some of my best soccer photos yet so I was really looking forward to shooting tonight's game, and with all the hype surrounding the Timbers lately the fans filled the stands making the photos just a little bit better.

What A Comeback!

When Oregon State fell behind 6-2 against Arizona State today I was pretty sure that we would all be heading back to the stadium tomorrow with the series tied. Somehow OSU pulled off an amazing comeback winning the series when Arizona State walked Brian Stamps with the bases loaded. I was a little disappointed about missing Friday night's game but today's game made up for that.

John Knight Twilight Meet

Today I shot a track meet at Western Oregon and pretty much got my butt kicked. Since I don't shoot track very often I don't have many safely shots to attempt or favorite angles to shoot from, and with events overlapping each other I had a hard time keeping track of all the action. The upside is that this was a twilight meet so the lighting was great all day.

OSU Baseball in Portland

The Beavers played in Portland against the Pilots on Tuesday afternoon. After a long time deciding whether or not I would go, I decided that I would be happier if I spent the money to drive up there than if I had stayed in Corvallis. I am glad that I went because shooting in a different stadium is always a lot of fun for me and the Beavs were in their road uniforms which I rarely get to shoot them in.

Baseball vs UC Santa Barbara

This weekend between all the rain showers a three game series was played here in Corvallis. Oregon State won on Friday 6-3 and on Saturday 11-5 but they had a hard time getting anything going on Sunday and lost 8-3. It was a cold and very wet weekend but with some cool late afternoon sunlight on Friday and a few sunny moments on Sunday I did manage to get a few different shots for OSU.

Oregon Duck Invitational

Today I shot the annual Duck Invitational which I thought was held at the same course every year but apparently I was wrong. As soon as I arrived at Shadow Hills Country Club I realized that there were not enough cars in the parking lot for a tournament. Luckily I have a phone that can answer most of my questions so I figured out that I needed to go to the Eugene Country Club. After quite a few wrong turns I did make it to the right course. Here are a few of the photos I took while wandering up and down the fairways.

Softball Home Opener

Today OSU played their first home games of the year against Utah State. The Beavers won both games and I got a few good photos that will be used for the OSU athletics website, yay!

High School Basketball Championships

A couple of weeks ago the Bend Bulletin got in touch with me to shoot the girls 4A high school basketball playoffs in Corvallis. Nothing to exciting here for me but I did get payed and I got a few photos in a newspaper. Here are a few of the images I shot.

Oregon State Gymnastics vs. Utah

Last night was the final home meet for the OSU gymnastics team. I have been pretty busy the past few days and last night during the meet all that running around caught up with me. Since I was so tired basically I found a spot for each rotation and shot the whole rotation from that one spot. Pretty uninspired form of shooting. Here is what I got.

Beaver Football Clinic

Today was the the Boys and Girls club Beaver Football Clinic. I guarantee this is the only time throughout the year that you might here me say the word cute.

Pro Timing Day

Today a few former OSU football players came back to Corvallis today so that some NFL scouts could get a good look at them. The players lifted some wights in the Sports Performance Center and then were timed at the indoor practice facility.
